Military constructions like Armor Stands and Archery Targets get their own sub-menu now. Image: Bay 12 Games/Kitfox Games via Polygonīuilding things with b is a lot more organized now, in that it’s organized at all. Designating items for Dumping and Smelting (i) is in it’s own menu as well. Now, there’s a separate menu for Digging (m), Tree Chopping (l), Plant Gathering (g), Smoothing and engraving (v), and Removing Orders (x). The subcategories have been broken out into their own menus with their own icons. Let’s start with what used to be Designations (d). Frustratingly, this somehow makes it more confusing if you’re used to the old version. Most of Dwarf Fortress’ menus have been rearranged in logical ways. Instead of just changing, text-based lists, there are cascading menus with helpful icons. This graphical redesign extends to the menus as well. But the new graphics - new tilesets provided by Mayday and Ironhand - are a welcome addition. Sure, some of the appeal of Dwarf Fortress has been the… let’s call it quirky nature of the ASCII graphics. Graphics, obviouslyĪside from the addition of a tutorial, the biggest change to Dwarf Fortress is visual - in that there are visuals now.

Beyond that, the help menu has been reorganized into something much more accessible and helpful. There’s a tutorial now! Image: Bay 12 Games/Kitfox Games via PolygonĮven if you close it, you can reactivate and interact with the tutorial at any time from the help menu. The new tutorial walks you through the first few steps of your first fortress and helps you learn the mechanics. This is why Dwarf Fortress’ learning curve is called a learning cliff. For nearly 20 years now, players were dumped into the game with no explanation and left to sort through the game’s legendary complexity on their own (or with a lot of help from the official wiki). The addition of a tutorial to Dwarf Fortress is a big deal. There’s a tutorial and the help is more helpful Below, we’ll give you the 11 biggest changes we noticed after putting a quarantined-with-COVID amount of hours into the original version and about 40 hours into the Steam release. For experienced players, it might take some time to adjust. And I prefer the fact that there are fewer clashes between graphics so I don't have to use 'k' or use temporal context to work out what some object is.With Dwarf Fortress’ Steam release, a few big things are different. On the other hand if you were learning Japanese you probably would spend a lot more time analysing each character and it will be some time before you are automatically translating them.įor me I see plenty of detail in the 16x16 tiles because I've gotten used to them. you don't make a conscious effort translating every squiggly line in every letter, straining to see every detail, but that's because your brain has adapted to it. When you see a word in English your brain has already translated it into a concept. It's the same as reading (well not that complex, but similar in principle). Pretty soon it is automatically translating that small picture of a dog into the concept 'dog' without me having to consciously think about it or strain my eyes. The human mind is amazingly good at creating an association between an image and concept, even with a 16x16 image.

To you the icons look indecipherable because you played the majority of your game in ascii.įor me the pictures are perfectly clear and I've only played the game a few days. to have to depend on context and recent events to distinguish what something is, instead of having the thing itself clearly indicate what it is. Well for me that sounds far more cumbersome. Kitfox Discord #modding-discussion channelīronzemurder and Oilfurnace (illustrated)
